Pre-Christmas Pamper Ladies Night

"I had heard great things about Friends of Roshni events, but had never been able to attend one in the past. So I was eager to see if the Ladies Pre-Christmas Pamper event would live up to my expectations.

By the time I arrived the party was in full flow, but there was still plenty of time to take advantage of the wide range of treatments that were on offer.

After visiting the bar for my free glass of wine and tasting the scrumptious buffet that was on offer, I made my way across to Silver Halo's jewellery stand. Jewellery has always been one of my weak points, so choosing what to buy without breaking the bank was a tough challenge. I ended up finding the perfect present for one of my friends, a gorgeous butterfly belly bar which was wrapped up ready for Christmas right in front of me.

Prising myself away from the jewellery stand, I then joined a work colleague at the Nails Inc nail bar to see if they could work their magic on my nails. They were able to make my poorly maintained nails look fabulous, and I was keen to show them off to my friends once the transformation had been completed.

The evening ended with a raffle which featured a range of prizes - overnight accommodation, tapas vouchers, driving lessons and much much more. I never win anything from raffles so I didn't hold high hopes, but I was gobsmacked when I won two prizes! I can't wait to use my gift vouchers at La Vina, and to demolish the box of chocolates that I was also lucky enough to win.

I am really looking forward to Friends of Roshni's next event, and want to thank everyone who was involved for putting on such a great event!" Victoria Burton

Ceilidh - 1st Sept 2007, Manchester

"St John's in Chorlton didn't know what it had let itself in for when it agreed to the latest fundraising idea from the Friends of Roshni. On Saturday 29th September, around 90 members and their families and friends gathered together for a Ceilidh and plenty of other entertainment.

The Ceilidh band entertained everyone and had such an experienced caller that he managed to get us all stripping the willow without any casualties. Dame acted as paparazzi for the night and captured it all on camera.

We danced the night away but that's not where the fun ended. Penny brought out the whisky bottle and had us all rolling pound coins at it. Our competitive natures came to the forefront and many people had rolled away five or ten pounds without realising.

The evening ended with the best raffle I've ever seen. Usually I secretly hope not to win a raffle thus avoiding a knitted loo roll holder. But no such prizes for Friends of Roshni. Someone had obviously been working hard to gather a fantastic array of prizes from meals at local restaurants to hairdressing appointments. There were plenty of prizes on offer and almost everyone must have gone home with something.

Not only was over £450 raised, but it was a really enjoyable night. A lot of hard work had obviously gone into co-ordinating all the events. A big thank you to everyone involved."

Ladies Night - Friday July 6th 2007, 5-11pm (with treatments available until at least 9pm), The Living Room Leeds

Ladies at Ladies Night

Ladies night was already in full swing when I arrived at about 6.30. I'm always a little apprehensive about arriving at an event on my own, but as I climbed the steps to the VIP lounge in the Living Room I was met by the smell of nail polish and the sound of laughter so I knew I was in the right place. Susanne, the host of the event was really welcoming and pointed me in the direction of the bar to collect my complementary, not to mention rather large glass of white wine.

My sister and date for the night joined me seconds later and we relaxed into the friendly atmosphere catching up with old friends and new.

I'd been chatting to Amy (a friend of Roshni and brilliant hairstylist) for a matter of minutes before she'd whipped out her GHD's and was transforming my boring straight hair into a mass of gorgeous curls and all for a small donation to charity. Meanwhile, my sister indulged in a therapeutic massage to unwind from a hard day in the office.

After another glass of wine and just as we were getting a little too comfortable at the bar, Penny took a moment to tell everyone about the Friends of Roshni charity and how our donations would make a real difference. Feeling inspired by a worthwhile cause, we made our way over to the chocolate fountain to enjoy fresh strawberries smothered in guilt free chocolate - it was for charity after all, not to mention we were getting one of our five a day!

Our next stop was to have our nails done by the girls from nails inc. who were very professional and super quick. The night drew to a close with the prize draw for the raffle. To my delight my number came up and although I was tempted by the giant cuddly polar bear, I would have struggled to get it home on the bus, so I opted for a restaurant voucher instead.

It was the perfect end to a great girly night. There was just enough time for a spot of shopping at the stalls selling jewellery, make-up and Friends of Roshni handicrafts before we had to leave.

The night was fantastic value for money and I can honestly say that I've never left a bar late on a Friday night looking better than I did when I went in, but Ladies night was the exception - not surprisingly the event was a huge success and raised over £460 for the Friends of Roshni charity.

Weekend in Borrowdale, 13-15 April 2007

17 of us headed for the Lakes in glorious sunshine on 13th April to enjoy a wonderful weekend of walking, canoeing, a bit of scrambling, and lots of making merry. The weekend raised a fantastic £567.86, helping us get ever closer to our target towards the building project.

Lakes Weekend Accomodation

"We got it totally wrong with our packing, not a drop of rain, suncream not umbrellas and a need to remove layers rather than put them on. We met at a mountain hut on the way to Great Gable and were blessed with glorious weather – so warm that the trees greened up visibly in the 48 hours we were there. When we arrived, we took in the idyllic surroundings – looking over to the opposite hills with their spoil heaps from the graphite mines (so precious 150 years ago that they were guarded by soldiers) and waterfalls. The party split on the next day – some went cycling but the majority climbed up to Sty Head with the more ambitious then climbing Great Gable, scrambling through ‘Napes Needle’ to get there, and the others diverting to Sprinkling Tarn for lunch (plenty of cake!) before returning to the hut for a shower and a relax or a visit to Keswick. Anyone who has been able to see the most recent of the ‘Wainwright Walks’ series on the television will realise what a beautiful spot Sprinkling Tarn is and the weather was tempting enough for a paddle if not a full swim. The perfect picnic spot!

On Sunday there was still time to enjoy ourselves – I was pleased to find some samples of graphite (or ‘wad’ as it is known locally) from the spoil heaps to use in my Chemistry lessons and many of us went to Grange to have some excellent ice-cream and a walk along the river.

We had a splendid weekend – I can’t wait to have another opportunity to get back to Borrowdale."

“Anyone that knows me knows that I am most definitely a city girl; however being at Borrowdale was a wonderful experience. The beautiful scenery and breath taking views, being surrounded by wild life and nature really reminded me that England has so much to offer than just Starbucks and Harrods!

It was a very relaxing weekend with an ‘anything goes’ feel to it. I had the opportunity to do a little of everything, from walking and climbing to cycling through the local villages and seeing the baby lambs and stopping off at a quaint tea shop for a good British brew. I have to say that the highlight of the weekend for me was the early morning canoe boat trip that Mick took Ruth and me on. WOW! The lake was so calm, gentle and still with only a few other people on the water, a very peaceful and relaxing experience that I am hoping to repeat on my next visit.

It was great to see my friends there and make some new ones too. The night time singsongs by the fire, drinking a little too much wine and smashing lots of plates! Whoops! And of course the excellent quiz where I was absolutely useless to my poor team.@

Friends of ROSHNI UK Ceilidh Night, 30th September 2006

Ceildh photos.jpg
Ceilidh Photos (larger photos below)

The Ceilidh was a huge success! Around 150 people joined us on the night, for a few hours of dancing, shopping, and trying to win lots of prizes!

Music was provided by Ceilidh band Peak Folk, and the dance floor was full all night. The Caller kept everyone going, and there weren't too many crashes as people turned or spun the wrong way!

Half way through the night, Damian O'Sullivan, who lived in Gwalior for 2 years, told us all a bit more about the vital work ROSHNI are undertaking, and how the evening's fundraising would help build a new rehab centre for the children and young people who rely on ROSHNI for support.

Then came a Whiskey Roll... people queued up to try to roll a pound coin towards a bottle of whisky, with the thrower of the closest coin taking home the bottle. A big thank you to David Gardener for organising that, and donating the bottle too.

Further funds were raised with a raffle, and a sale of cards and bags produced by the Vocational Training Group at ROSHNI. We raised a grand total of £858.10 (after costs)!

Special thanks to:

  • St Anne's hall for giving us the venue free of charge
  • Damian Fox and Simon Homer, for producing the publicity material free of charge
  • Coriander restaurant (Chorlton) for donating raffle prizes
  • Toms Toms restaurant (Chorlton) for donating a raffle prize
  • New Peking Palace restaurant (Chorlton) for donating a raffle prize
  • Loop (Chorlton), Bargain Booze (Barlow Moor Road, Chorlton), and Peak Folk, for donating raffle prizes
  • Members of Friends of ROSHNI who helped out on the night, and donated raffle prizes

And thanks to all who came, and helped make the night so successful!
